How Blisters Can be Prevented

When you increase the amount of friction on the foot, you also increase the risk of getting blisters. Blisters can originate from many sources, including socks, sweat, shoes and restricted foot motion. It’s important to have adequate toe room in the shoe; this can lessen friction, therefore preventing blisters. When proper insoles are worn, fewer blisters may occur. Additionally, wearing the correct socks, such as synthetic or wool socks, can be important in reducing skin friction. Sweat can also be a factor in producing blisters and typically happens in the warmer months. Using an antiperspirant may aid in producing less sweat, and fewer blisters may occur.

Barefoot running has increased in popularity in recent years, and some experts believe it’s the way we should run. Dr. Irene Davis, a professor in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School says that humans have evolved to run barefoot. The Raramuri people of northwest Mexico are famous for running barefoot for long distances. However, barefoot running does have its downsides and isn’t for everyone. Dr. Davis believes that running barefoot may prevent running injuries. Barefoot runners tend to land on the balls of their feet when they run, which causes less stress and impact on the foot. Running barefoot may also allow the runner to get a better feel for the surface and cause the foot to move more naturally. Another reported advantage of running barefoot is that foot muscles may become stronger and more durable. Finally, running barefoot forces us to be more observant to the surface we are running on and avoid small obstacles. The Impact of Barefoot Running

  • Running without shoes changes the motion of your running, as most running is done by landing on the heel of the feet.
  • Running barefoot requires a different way of running; the landing is done on the front part of the feet.

The Advantages of Barefoot Running

  • When running and landing on the front feet, the impact on the feet and ankle is reduced; this can reduce stress injuries.
  • It strengthens muscles in the feet, ankles and lower legs.

The Drawbacks of Barefoot Running

  • No protection while running, makes it likely that runners will land on sharp objects and scrapes, bruises and cuts on the feet will result.

So, what can runners do to make barefoot running safe? It’s best to make a slow transition from running shoes to barefoot running. Once the feet begin to adjust, try walking, then jogging and gradually increasing the distance. Minimalist running shoes may also be an option.
